The 1099 deadlines arrive in early 2027, but the work that decides whether you meet them happens in November and December. By January, your vendor records will either support an accurate filing or leave you scrambling. This guide covers the 1099 deadlines for the 2027 filing season and the penalties for missing them. It also lays out a timeline that moves most of the work into the last quarter of 2026.
Two changes make this season different from last year. First, the federal reporting threshold for Form 1099-NEC and most Form 1099-MISC payments rose from $600 to $2,000 for payments made in 2026. Second, the IRS moved electronic filing to a single system, IRIS, after retiring its older FIRE platform.
1099 Deadlines and Rules at a Glance
If you need the short version, here it is.
- Form 1099-NEC deadline: Monday, February 1, 2027, for both the IRS copy and the recipient copy. January 31 falls on a Sunday this year, which moves the date.
- Reporting threshold: $2,000 or more paid to a payee during 2026, up from $600.
- Electronic filing: Required if you file 10 or more information returns in total, through IRIS or an authorized provider.
- Penalties: From $60 to $340 per form for returns due in 2027, and $690 or more per form for intentional disregard with no cap.
The 2027 1099 Deadlines Calendar
Information returns run on a much faster calendar than income tax returns. When a deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day, which pushes several 2027 dates later than usual.
| Form | Recipient copy due | IRS paper filing due | IRS e-filing due |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1099-NEC | February 1, 2027 | February 1, 2027 | February 1, 2027 |
| 1099-MISC | February 1, 2027* | March 1, 2027 | March 31, 2027 |
| W-2 | February 1, 2027 | February 1, 2027 | February 1, 2027 |
| 1099-K | February 1, 2027 | March 1, 2027 | March 31, 2027 |
*If you report amounts in box 8 or box 10 of Form 1099-MISC, the recipient copy is due February 16, 2027, because February 15 is Presidents’ Day.
No Later E-Filing Date for Form 1099-NEC
Form 1099-MISC gives you until the end of March when you e-file. Form 1099-NEC does not, because the IRS uses it early in the season to verify income on individual returns and catch fraudulent refund claims. Extensions for Form 1099-NEC are also not automatic, and requests go through Form 8809. The IRS grants them only for specific hardships, such as a disaster or the death or serious illness of the person responsible for filing. For planning purposes, treat February 1 as a fixed date.
The 10-Return E-Filing Rule
Starting with returns due in 2024, the IRS lowered the electronic filing threshold from 250 returns to 10. The count is an aggregate across information return types, which surprises a lot of business owners.
Consider a business that files three W-2s, four 1099-NECs, and three 1099-MISCs. Those add up to 10 returns, so every one of them must be filed electronically. Filing on paper when e-filing is required can lead the IRS to treat the returns as not filed, which triggers the penalties described below.
For the 2027 season, electronic returns go through the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS). Businesses that previously filed directly through FIRE need an IRIS Transmitter Control Code, and those applications can take weeks. If you file through an accounting firm or through your accounting software, the provider handles transmission instead.
E-filing is worth considering even below the threshold. You receive confirmation that the IRS accepted your returns, built-in validation catches many errors before submission, and you avoid the cost of forms and postage.
A Year-End 1099 Timeline: November Through February
The most dependable way to meet the 1099 deadlines is to finish most of the work before the holidays. This timeline assumes a calendar-year business filing in early 2027.
November: Get the Books Current
Start by confirming that your books are reconciled through October, since your 1099 totals can only be as accurate as the transactions behind them. Next, pull a year-to-date vendor payment report and look for every payee approaching $2,000. Under the new threshold, the vendors close to that line deserve the most attention, because a single December invoice can push them over.
Request a Form W-9 from any vendor that does not have one on file. Our 1099 filing guide explains which vendors need one. In QuickBooks, confirm that each contractor is flagged as a 1099 vendor and that your expense accounts map to the correct form and box. November is also the right time to check your state’s filing requirements, while there is still room to register for direct state filing if you need it.
Early December: Separate Payments by Method
Reconcile every credit card and payment platform account through November. Card and platform payments are reported by the processor on Form 1099-K, so they need to drop out of your 1099 totals. Payments by check, ACH, wire, and Zelle stay in.
This is also the point to decide who will file. Out of the Box Technology offers early bird pricing on our 1099 filing service for requests submitted by December 15.
Late December: Verify Before You Close
Run TIN Matching on new vendors, or ask your filing provider to run it. Follow up on outstanding W-9s while vendors are still responsive, because January is when every one of their clients sends the same request. If a vendor refuses to provide a TIN, talk to your accountant about backup withholding before you make another payment.
First Week of January: Close December and Run the Report
Close and reconcile December as early as you can. Then run your 1099 report and compare it with your vendor list. If you are working with our team, all information and system access must be in place by January 8, 2027. That is the cutoff for us to guarantee filing by February 1.
Mid-January: Review and Confirm
Review the draft forms for duplicate vendors, outdated addresses, and reimbursements that were coded as services. Sending a preview to your largest contractors and asking them to confirm the amount takes little time, and it prevents most corrected returns.
Last Week of January: File and Distribute
Submit your returns and furnish recipient copies by mail, or electronically where recipients have consented. Save the IRS acknowledgments with your year-end records. The 1099-NEC deadline is Monday, February 1, and the 1099-MISC deadlines follow on March 1 for paper and March 31 for e-filing.
1099 Penalties for Late or Incorrect Filing
Penalties apply per form and increase the longer a correct return is outstanding. The amounts below are the IRS figures for returns due in 2027, which the IRS adjusts for inflation each year and lists on its information return penalties page.
- Up to 30 days late: $60 per return. Filing 10 forms on February 20 would cost $600.
- 31 days late through August 1: $130 per return. Filing those same 10 forms in June would cost $1,300.
- After August 1 or not filed: $340 per return. Ignoring 10 forms entirely would cost $3,400.
- Intentional disregard: $690 or more per return, or 10% of the amounts that should have been reported if that figure is greater. There is no annual cap.
Two features of the penalty rules catch businesses by surprise. First, the IRS treats the IRS copy and the payee copy as separate obligations. A form that is late on both counts can therefore draw two penalties. Second, incorrect information counts as a failure in its own right. A wrong TIN or a misreported amount can trigger the same per-form penalty as a missing return.
There is some relief available. The IRS can waive penalties for reasonable cause, and a de minimis safe harbor excuses very small dollar errors. Neither one is a substitute for filing correctly the first time.
IRS Notices That Follow Filing Errors
Even an on-time filing can generate follow-up work when the data behind it is wrong. Two issues account for most of it.
Name and TIN Mismatches
When the name and TIN on a filed 1099 do not match IRS records, the IRS sends you a CP2100 or CP2100A notice listing the mismatches. You then have to send a B-Notice to each affected vendor. If the issue is not resolved, you must begin backup withholding at 24% on future payments to that vendor. Running TIN Matching before you file prevents most of these notices.
State Filing Gaps
Many states participate in the Combined Federal/State Filing Program, where the IRS forwards your federal data to the state. Several states still require direct filing for Form 1099-NEC, however, and some may keep the $600 threshold even though the federal threshold is now $2,000. A federal filing alone may leave you short at the state level.

How Out of the Box Technology Keeps You Ahead of the 1099 Deadlines
Our 1099 filing service takes the deadline work off your plate. We review your QuickBooks file for eligible vendors, analyze the transaction detail, and give you a list of missing W-9s. We then prepare a datasheet for your approval, run TIN Matching, and e-file your federal and state returns, and every recipient receives a filed copy.
The service starts from the books as they stand, and it does not include collecting W-9s or catching up bookkeeping. That is why the November and December steps above matter so much. If your books are behind, our accounting clean-up team can bring them current before January. Our monthly bookkeeping service then keeps the next year accurate from the start, which supports your tax filing as well as your 1099s.
