In Case You Havet Heard…
In case you havet heard, as of December 10th, 2021, at 5:00 PM, PST, Intuit will no longer sell non-subscription licenses for QuickBooks Desktop Pro and QuickBooks Desktop Premier, thus, making this your last chance to buy pro & premier without a Plus subscription. Instead, they will offer annual subscriptions for these products called, QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus and QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus. These product subscriptions come with some valuable features, not previously offered by their predecessors, making the annual subscription offering well worth the cost. The only drawback for the subscription model is that payment must be made annually and purchasing the software outright is no longer offered. This may cause cash flow disruptions for small businesses, but can be easily overcome with effective cash management strategies. Below is a breakdown of what this transition looks like.
Transition Example: John and Jane Doe
The following is a fictional scenario that has been created to highlight the differences between the two different models Intuit is switching between.
- The first model, the Non-subscription model, has been retired by Intuit, effective November 10th, 2021, and is included within this example to show you how products and pricing were before the switch.
- The second model, the Subscription model, is what Intuit will be adopting. This has been included to show you how the model has changed. Although the Subscription model has already begun, the official final day of Non-subscription license sales is December 10th, 2021 at 5:00 PM, PST.
The Non-subscription Model (John Doe)
John Doe decides to purchase a QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2021, 3-user license, for him, his bookkeeper, and his accountant. John makes a one-time payment for the 2021 version of the software prior to December 10th, 2021 at 5:00 PM, PST. Once the software is paid for and activated, John owns the (license) right to use the software indefinitely. John is able to utilize the QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2021 software, with up to three simultaneous users, and with all of its available features, through its discontinuation date of May 31st, 2024. If John decides to add or remove a user(s) from his software, he will invalidate the licenses and will need to switch to a subscription plan in order to reactivate it (see Final Notes below for more information on this). After the discontinuation date for the 2021 version of the software, John can still use the software, but with limited features. This is because the product becomes unsupported after its discontinuation, meaning it will no longer accommodate the following:
- Key features that require an internet connection, such as online banking
- Critical QuickBooks add-ons, such as QuickBooks Payroll and QuickBooks Payments (Merchant Services)
- Important 3rd-party QuickBooks integrations, such as Avalara, Expensify & Webgility
- Intuit Technical Support – You will no longer be eligible for support as Intuit does not provide technical support for unsupported versions of the software
The Subscription Model (Jane Doe)
Jane Doe decides to purchase a QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2022, 3-user license, for herself, her bookkeeper, and her accountant. Jane contacts Out of the Box Technology to receive exclusive discounts from an official Intuit Elite QuickBooks Solution Provider (QSP) and makes a one-time payment for the Plus annual subscription to access the QuickBooks Desktop Premier application. Once the subscription is paid for and activated, Jane is able to access the QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2022 application, with up to three simultaneous users and all of its available features, in addition to valuable features only included in a Plus subscription, If Jane decides to add or remove a user(s) from her software, he will be able to do so easily. When her annual subscription expires, Jane can renew her subscription and continue to leverage the most current version of the QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus application, with all of its latest and greatest features.
So what are these valuable benefits Jane receives with her Plus subscription?

Any Final Notes?
It is worth noting that Intuit is already selling QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus and QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus, and both are already active. Intuit will allow QuickBooks Solution Providers (QSP), like Out of the Box Technology, to sell QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus and QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus, as well as continue to sell the remaining stock of the Non-subscription QuickBooks Desktop Pro and QuickBooks Desktop Premier, while supplies last. If you want to save money, act quickly!
Looking back at the John Doe example, where he purchases QuickBooks Desktop Premier, and there is a mention about how adding or removing a user(s) invalidates his licenses and will require him to switch to a subscription plan in order to reactivate his QuickBooks. This is an important caveat to contemplate when deciding on user count, and it is important to anticipate growth or cutbacks accurately so you can grow into, or back out of, the software without having to change your user count. If you anticipate growth in your QuickBooks user count over the next 3+ years, then it may make sense to purchase the maximum allotted user count so you can grow into the solution without having to transition into the subscription model.
Lastly, now is a great time to evaluate whether or not the time is right to transition to QuickBooks Online! With all of the uncertainty around the changes being made to the desktop versions of the software, and Intuis unconfirmed plans to eventually phase out the desktop versions of the software altogether, now is looking like a better time than ever to evaluate whether or not the switch is right for you.
